Polymarket Fortifies Surveillance Systems Ahead of U.S. Midterms

As U.S. midterm elections approach, Polymarket has overhauled its trade surveillance and intelligence operations to combat insider trading. Under the guidance of former FBI investigator Shana Bautista, the platform is leveraging blockchain analytics and machine learning to flag suspicious activity, following over 100 prior referrals to federal law enforcement.

Shana Bautista, who joined the platform in June as global head of investigations, emphasized that the company now possesses the technical infrastructure required to identify anomalous trading patterns. The surveillance program synthesizes machine learning, blockchain monitoring, and third-party research to isolate potential misconduct. This push for transparency comes as U.S. lawmakers intensify their scrutiny, with several members of Congress advocating for strict bans on political event wagering by government officials.

Controversy regarding the platform remains linked to the accessibility of its international site, which is technically restricted for U.S. users following a 2022 CFTC settlement. While researchers at Allium have suggested that significant volumes of U.S.-linked wallet activity persist on the international exchange, the company maintains that its current guardrails effectively block the vast majority of prohibited traffic. Investigators are particularly focused on preventing the exploitation of sensitive government or military information, a concern highlighted by prior cases involving the use of classified data to trade on geopolitical contracts.
