European Gas Prices Edge Toward Multi-Year Peaks

Dutch TTF futures are hovering near 83 euros per megawatt-hour, marking their highest levels since early 2023. Despite an unexpected surge in storage injections and an easing of geopolitical tensions, the continent faces a precarious winter as supply constraints remain stubbornly entrenched well below historical seasonal norms.

European Gas Prices Edge Toward Multi-Year Peaks

While storage levels reached 73.1% by early October—surpassing initial expectations of a sub-70% threshold—the 15-year average of 90% remains a distant target. The market is caught between this physical recovery and the lingering shadow of absent Qatari LNG exports. Goldman Sachs analyst Samantha Dart previously suggested that prices might need to climb toward 100 euros to effectively divert Asian LNG demand toward Europe, a move essential for balancing regional inventory.

Citi analyst Maggie Xueting Lin points to three stabilizing forces: industrial demand destruction, milder weather patterns, and Ukraine’s pivot from a net gas importer to a potential exporter. Industrial consumption in a key six-country sample fell 8% year-over-year in September, holding nearly 30% below pre-2022 levels. Furthermore, Ukraine’s ability to re-export up to 1 billion cubic meters of gas this winter could provide a significant buffer, loosening the regional balance by 4.5 billion cubic meters compared to the previous year. Despite these tailwinds, Lin maintains a cautious outlook, projecting a fourth-quarter base case of 56 euros as the market continues to grapple with the structural impact of sustained demand curtailment.
