KB Kookmin Card and SBI Holdings Pilot Cross-Border Stablecoin Payments

South Korea’s KB Kookmin Card and Japan’s SBI Holdings have entered a four-party agreement to test AI-driven identity verification and cross-border stablecoin payments. The partnership aims to enable Japanese tourists to settle purchases at South Korean merchants using digital assets, leveraging automated agents for secure financial authorization.

The initiative involves cybersecurity firm Everspin and their joint venture, SBI Everspin, to integrate the KYA Trust Gateway. This platform is designed to verify AI agents, ensuring they operate within predefined spending limits and hold explicit user permissions. By connecting these automated systems to the existing KB Pay platform, the companies intend to streamline how digital assets move through traditional financial infrastructure, covering settlement, refunds, and fraud prevention measures.

This collaboration builds on a broader trend of financial integration between the two nations. Earlier in October 2026, SBI DigiTrust launched a separate QR-based stablecoin pilot with NICE Information & Telecommunication and DSRV. While the specific stablecoins and launch timelines remain under review, the participants are focused on establishing the technical foundation for secure, cross-border digital transactions. Everspin brings significant data to the project, reporting cumulative detection of 25 billion cybersecurity threats across 150 institutions, which will inform the security protocols for these new automated payment pathways.
