Solana Prepares for Alpenglow Upgrade Amid Price Slide

Solana faces a sharp market correction, with the token shedding 9.34% over the past week to hover near $107. As institutional outflows hit a seven-day streak, the blockchain prepares for the October 21 Alpenglow upgrade, a technical overhaul intended to slash transaction finality times from 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds.

The upcoming transition to the Votor voting system marks the most significant change to the network’s consensus mechanism since 2020. By shifting away from the TowerBFT model, validators will broadcast votes directly to one another rather than embedding them on-chain. While this promises a major efficiency gain, the shift arrives at a precarious moment for SOL, which is currently struggling to defend support levels between $104 and $105.

Technical charts reflect this fragility, as the asset remains trapped below its 20-day simple moving average of $115.83. Analysts suggest that a failure to hold the $104 mark could expose the psychological $100 floor, potentially inviting further downside toward $95. Conversely, a reversal would require reclaiming the $110 resistance zone to signal a change in momentum. Institutional sentiment appears equally cautious, with SoSoValue data reporting $1.04 million in net outflows from U.S. spot ETFs on October 13, marking a full week of consistent withdrawals.
