The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 0.6% rise in the Consumer Price Index for September, outpacing the 0.4% increase seen in August. Headline inflation reached 3.7% over the last 12 months, exceeding the 3.6% forecast by analysts. Energy costs remain a significant driver, embedding themselves deeper into the economy and fueling concerns that interest rates may stay elevated for a longer duration than previously anticipated.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy sectors, also outperformed expectations. The annual core rate climbed to 2.6%, surpassing the 2.5% consensus estimate. As markets digest these figures, spot gold has faced significant downward pressure, last trading at $4,107.30 an ounce—a decline of more than 1% for the day. Investors are now closely monitoring how these inflationary pressures will dictate the Federal Reserve's trajectory through the end of the year.
