Iranian Forces Intensify Maritime Strikes in Strait of Hormuz

Twelve vessels sustained damage between October 5 and 11, including six on a single Sunday, as Iranian forces escalate a campaign of maritime sabotage. The surge in attacks, targeting commercial tankers and container ships, challenges international shipping stability and threatens to disrupt oil flow ahead of the November elections.

Iranian Forces Intensify Maritime Strikes in Strait of Hormuz

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, confirmed the IRGC’s role in the nightly strikes, boasting that the Islamic Republic maintains firm control over the waterway. State media broadcast images on Wednesday of a container ship sinking with 2,500 containers on board after allegedly striking a naval mine. The IRGC characterized the vessel as illegal, accusing it of carrying contraband through unauthorized routes.

While the United States maintains a naval escort mission to protect tanker transit, Tehran dismisses these efforts, claiming American vessels avoid proximity to Iranian shores to evade projectile fire. The intensity of the current campaign is unprecedented for the region; UK Maritime Trade Operations and other security sources report at least 24 foreign vessels targeted since October 1. Should this pace continue, market analysts anticipate significant upward pressure on global oil prices by the end of the month.
