Zcash Grants Committee Abandons Controversial 98,000 ZEC Funding Shift

Facing mounting pressure from community members and prominent industry figures, the Zcash Community Grants committee has officially scrapped a proposal to reallocate 98,000 ZEC toward mining rewards. The decision halts a plan that would have diverted treasury reserves and future subsidies, leaving the project’s funding model in a state of flux.

Zcash Grants Committee Abandons Controversial 98,000 ZEC Funding Shift

The proposed changes, introduced on October 29, aimed to move 36,200 ZEC from existing reserves into the Network Sustainability Mechanism while simultaneously slashing future income projections. Had the plan proceeded, the committee would have redirected roughly $128.7 million in value—based on recent trading prices near $1,310—to bolster mining incentives as block subsidies decrease. Following a review of community feedback, the committee confirmed in a November 3 forum post that it will no longer pursue the initiative.

The withdrawal opens the door for competing governance proposals, including a plan backed by Zcash co-founders Sean Bowe and Zooko Wilcox. Their alternative suggests a 50,000 ZEC treasury contribution and the redirection of future block rewards into a dedicated development and legal-defense fund. Meanwhile, the committee continues to receive its standard 8% allocation of newly issued ZEC, amounting to approximately 144 coins daily, until a new governance consensus is reached.

This debate follows sharp criticism from Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who recently questioned the committee's autonomy and spending priorities. The scrutiny intensified after controversial outreach projects drew ire from parts of the user base. As the committee steps back, the future of its funding now rests on the broader Zcash governance process, where upcoming votes will determine whether to maintain the current structure or shift control toward direct coinholder oversight.
