Gold's technical breakdown challenges its safe-haven status

Gold has reclaimed the $4,000 level, yet the recovery remains fragile. Michele Schneider, chief market strategist at MarketGauge, warns that recent technical damage suggests the precious metal’s traditional role as a safe-haven asset has been compromised, leaving investors to look toward U.S. government bonds instead.

Gold's technical breakdown challenges its safe-haven status

Schneider, a long-term gold bull who currently holds no positions in the sector, argues that the metal has failed to respond to persistent inflation and geopolitical instability. The recent 3% drop in prices, occurring even as the U.S. dollar weakened and 10-year bond yields fell, signals a fundamental shift in market sentiment. She views this divergence as a sign that the commodity market may face a prolonged period of weakness, regardless of the underlying economic arguments that previously drove prices to record highs.

Critical support levels and market outlook

For gold, Schneider identifies $3,940 as the line in the sand; a sustained drop below this point could trigger a deeper correction toward $3,500 or even $2,500. While she acknowledges that a move back above $4,000 could offer a tactical entry point with strict risk management, she remains skeptical of the current trend. Silver faces similar headwinds, with Schneider noting that the metal remains unattractive until prices potentially drop to $35 an ounce. She warns that until technical patterns stabilize, both gold and silver should be treated as "guilty until proven innocent," with investors favoring the renewed stability of Treasury bonds over the volatility of the precious metals complex.
