Anthropic Pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 After Government Export Order

A U.S. government directive has forced Anthropic to pull its newly released Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models from the market. Officials cited national security risks tied to a potential jailbreak method, triggering a sweeping compliance move that blocks access for all foreign nationals and internal staff alike.

Anthropic Pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 After Government Export Order

The directive, received at 5:21 p.m. ET on Friday, mandates a total block on the two models. While the company maintains that other systems like Opus 4.8 remain unaffected, the sudden recall of the flagship Fable 5 represents a significant setback for the firm. Anthropic claims the government's fears stem from a narrow, non-universal jailbreak that allows the model to identify or repair software vulnerabilities within a specific codebase.

Anthropic has publicly pushed back against the severity of the order, arguing that applying such strict standards would effectively freeze all new frontier model deployments across the industry. Despite the friction with regulators, the company is continuing its aggressive infrastructure expansion. It is currently securing $36 billion in financing through Blackstone and Apollo Global Management to fund custom tensor processing unit chips from Google. As the company works to resolve what it characterizes as a misunderstanding, it continues to lobby for standardized global rules governing the safety and deployment of advanced AI systems.
