Kuwait Targets 2 Million Bpd Output as Strait of Hormuz Reopens

Kuwait expects to ramp up oil production to 2 million barrels per day within a week, a sharp recovery from the 573,000 barrels averaged in May. This surge depends on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the critical maritime chokepoint that forced the nation to slash output due to limited export alternatives.

Kuwait Targets 2 Million Bpd Output as Strait of Hormuz Reopens

Sheikh Nawaf Saud Al-Sabah, CEO of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, confirmed the accelerated timeline to the Kuwait News Agency. The country’s production capacity had plummeted in recent weeks as the closure of the Strait blocked its primary export route. Unlike regional neighbors such as Saudi Arabia or the UAE, Kuwait lacks pipeline infrastructure to bypass the passage, leaving its energy sector uniquely vulnerable to maritime transit disruptions.

Restoring output to pre-war levels remains contingent on the stability of the U.S.-Iran memorandum and the normalization of commercial shipping. While the state aims for a 2 million bpd milestone within seven days, other officials within the corporation previously estimated that a full return to pre-war production volumes could require up to 12 weeks of sustained traffic. Kuwait has already initiated efforts to reconnect with Asian buyers, signaling a rapid shift as the region looks to recover a combined 13 million bpd of total shut-in production capacity.
